Four works from my new series “Chlorophyll” are being unveiled to the public: from 21 to 30 August, they will be on display at FLOW ART SPACE Basel as part of the group exhibition “SUMMER-2” during the Basel Art Days.

“Chlorophyll” is a tribute to the colour green: its radiance, its freshness, its countless shades, and the contrasts it highlights between a wide variety of forms.

If you search for “leaf green” on Wikipedia, you’ll land on the page about chlorophyll – those colour pigments that absorb the red and blue parts of the light spectrum most strongly, whilst reflecting the green parts of the light on plant structures such as cell walls. Chlorophyll, then, is the origin of our concept of the colour green.

With the ‘Chlorophyll’ series, I also wish to celebrate the substance that made life on Earth possible in the first place. Chlorophyll is capable of converting light energy into chemical energy, thereby enabling plants to grow and thrive. It forms the basis of photosynthesis, a process in which carbon dioxide (CO₂) is converted into oxygen (O₂): the plant grows (glucose + carbon), and we have air to breathe.

The prints are on HAHNEMÜHLE Fine Art HEMP 290 g. I have deliberately chosen a medium made from plant-based, renewable, naturally green material.

How often have we longed for fresh, vibrant greenery during this hot summer? As the height of summer draws to a close, the FLOW ART SPACE Basel glows green and – right by the entrance on the Rhine side – invites visitors to immerse themselves in a flow of shades of green.
